WAYO 2011 International Conductor Program

04 May

Media Release

In a coup for the Western Australian Youth Orchestra, WA Youth Music has secured the services of renowned Estonian conductor, Arvo Volmer, to lead the WAYO through a program featuring the signature works of three of the most influential composers of their day.

The three works to be performed all contain elements of the magical and otherworldly. Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun tells of a faun dreaming of nymphs and fairies, while Stravinsky's Firebird Suite with its searing rhythms and soaring melodies takes flight with a story of a brave prince seeking a princess' love. Concluding the evening will be arguably Berlioz' most famous work - his Symphonie Fantastique - a feast of witches, strange visions, a grand ball and even a ferocious march to the scaffold.

Arvo Volmer is the Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Estonian National Opera.  He is also one of the most in-demand guest conductors on the international stage, and regular guest with The Bolshoi and the BBC Philharmonic.

Maestro Volmer's versatility as a conductor for opera and ballet as well as orchestral music makes him ideally suited to provide the quality musical training and performance experience for the WAYO to which WA Youth Music aspires.

Tickets are available now from WA Youth Music on 9328 9859.
