Each year, thanks to our Principal Partner, Woodside, a member of the WA Youth Orchestra is given the opportunity to perform a concerto of their own choice with WAYO at their September concert at the Perth Concert Hall. The winner also receives a cash prize of $1,000.
After some great performances from several orchestra members at auditions, Catherine Lane was declared this this year's winner, and will perform Richard Strauss' Horn Concerto No.1
Catherine began studying French Horn at the age of 10 through the Armadale Senior High School music program. Although horn wasn't her first choice, she rapidly established a rapport with the instrument, which has now developed into a healthy working relationship. After leaving high school, Catherine embarked upon a career in science, working her way to a PhD in Molecular Biology. During this time, Catherine and her horn still got together regularly to play in community ensembles. However, the horn grew more insistent, and eventually led Catherine to play with the WAAPA/UWA wind ensemble, where she was encouraged her to start taking music more seriously, so in 2007 she started a music degree at UWA. Catherine joined WAYO in 2008, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Creative Arts at WAAPA.
